SDO14152 - Southern Electric 11kv Cable Replacement, Big Wood/Valley of the Stones, Dorchester, Dorset. Archaeological Watching Brief

‘Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Southern Electric plc to carry out an archaeological watching brief during works to replace overhead cable support poles within the area of a number of Scheduled Monuments to the west and south-west of Dorchester, Dorset; specifically the Big Wood barrow cemetery (centred on NGR SY 610 897) and Valley of the Stones (centred on NGR SY 597 875). The watching brief was undertaken in April 1996, and included the hand-excavation of specific locations prior to the erection of new cable support poles. No features or deposits of archaeological significance were observed. The archive is currently stored at the offices of Wessex Archaeology at Old Sarum, Salisbury, under the site code W1692, but will be deposited at The Dorset County Museum, Dorchester in due course.’
