SDO14106 - Archaeological Observations During a Water Main Renewal Between Long Barrow Farmhouse, Long Bredy and the Water Pumping Station on Martin's Down, Long Bredy

‘The archaeological monitoring of the laying of a replacement water main between Long Barrow Farmhouse and the water pumping station on Martin’s Down was carried out during February and March 1998. Several important earthworks, a large proportion of which are Scheduled Ancient Monument in the form of prehistoric burial mounds, survive adjacent to the northern half of the pipeline. Archaeological monitoring of the pipeline entailed close observation of topsoil and subsoil stripping to enable the identification of possible associated archaeological deposits to be recorded. Only limited evidence for archaeological activity was encountered, comprising three sub-surface features in Plot 4, one of which may represent the remains of a negative lynchet, and the other two likely to be natural in origin; none appear to have any direct relationship with the adjacent extant monuments. Small quantities of artefacts (pottery, worked flint and animal bone) were recovered from topsoil contexts in all plots and from subsoil contexts in Plot 1. There were, however no significant quantities of artefacts or features to suggest the presence of extensive archaeological activity associated with the adjacent extant monuments.’
