Abstract/Summary

Observations and recording during improvements to the car park at Kingston Lacy. A watching brief was carried out simultaneously to the north of the existing car park. This involved the monitoring of soil stripping prior to the construction of a water diversion bund. The work in the car park area (Area 1) revealed an extant pathway (context F3) running on a NNW-SSE alignment. Finds from within the matrix of the pathway suggest a Late Victorian date. Six areas of residual worked flint (layer/context 2), probably forming a background scatter or possibly overlying “in situ” features, were plotted and recorded. No features were observed in the monitoring of area 2, although a scatter of post-medieval roofing tile suggests a building of some description in the vicinity. The work took place during September and October 2008. The second phase of archaeological monitoring took place in early November 2008. This involved a watching brief during the trenching for water relief pipes. No archaeological features were recognised in section or plan throughout the 140 metres of trenching.
