Abstract/Summary

Report on a programme of archaeological observations and recording undertaken by Terrain Archaeology in 2012 during the installation of new vehicular control bollards at South Walks within the area of the Scheduled Monument of Dorchester Roman Walls. Seven bollards were installed at two locations. Of these, five bollards were shallowly-seated and work disturbed only modern deposits. Installation of two retractable bollards (one at each location) required digging to a depth of 1m below ground level and archaeological deposits were encountered at both locations. The top of the inner defensive ditch was seen just east of Acland Road, and natural chalk seen next to Icen Way may be evidence of a break in the defences, perhaps for a south-eastern gate, or truncation of ditch fills due to insertion of Icen Way.
