Abstract/Summary

Results of archaeological evaluation carried out by Bournemouth Universite School of Conservation Sciences at Higher Bulbury House, Morden, prior to determination of a planning application to construct an indoor swimming pool. Bulbury Camp, an Iron Age hillfort, lies some 100 metres to the south west. Two trenches were excavated using manual techniques. Two Bronze Age flints, one an arrowhead, were recovered from the topsoil These were probably deposited along with hill wash, or by the action of ploughing. There was no evidence to suggest that the proposed development is likely to disturb buried archaeology. The evaluation trenches contained only out-of-context finds. ... The Bronze Age flints were found within the topsoil of Trench 1 and these are likely to have been deposited as a result of hill wash and/or ploughing. In Trench II, the presence of a Post Medieval potsherd near to the surface of the natural suggests disturbance or soil-sorting of a comparatively recent date. The two shallow pits at the SW end of this trench were probably formed by tree roots or by the digging/turning of the soil at some time later that the date of the fragment of 'modern' CBM from the pit fill.
