Abstract/Summary

A watching brief on construction of a new dwelling and associated groundwork to the rear of 16 West Street, Bridport was conducted between January and March 2010 by Arrowhead Archaeology to fulfil a condition on the planning consent. A test pit was excavated in an area judged to be high archaeological potential. The development area had been heavily disturbed in the post-medieval period, however a probable cess pit was infilled in the late 14-15th century. Residual sherds of medieval coarseware indicate that medieval features had probably originally occupied much of the area. Two sherds of pottery from the bottom of the stratified sequence in the test pit may be 10th or 11th century date and may thus represent the only finds so far from the pre-Conquest settlement in Bridport.
