Abstract/Summary

'Absolute Archaeology were contracted by Wireless Infrastructure Group, after hand excavations for the base/plinth of a Vodafone tower revealed a linear feature measuring 300mm in width, comprising compacted limestone and nodular flint. This was within an area truncated by previous ground work associated with the adjacent sub-station. First impressions were of an outlying feature relating to the area of extensive Romano-British occupation, located during ground works to the east of the Vodafone development (Valentin 1998, 108; McMahon 1998, 120). Further examination concluded that the feature running on an N-S alignment was a late 18th/early 19th century land drain cut into Quaternary River terrace deposits (BGS). The feature was dated by a single sherd of green glazed pancheon found within the matrix of the land drain make up. No other features were observed within the development area.'
