Abstract/Summary

‘The client, Southwell Pre-School, proposed to erect a new modular building in the grounds of Southwell Primary School, Portland. The school is located in are of Prehistoric and Roman activity, and is thus an area of archaeological potential. As a condition of the granting of Planning Permission, the Planning Authority required that an Archaeological Watching Brief should be carried out during ground works. Bournemouth Archaeology was contracted to undertake the Brief. The excavations revealed a thick layer of made ground overlying limestone bedrock. No archaeological features or artefacts were seen or recovered.’
