Title | Report on the watching brief undertaken at White Mill Pond, White Mill, Shapwick, Dorset |
Author/Originator | Powlesland, I |
Date/Year | 2010 |
Abstract/Summary
Archaeological monitoring was conducted at White Mill Pond during the second stage habitat enhancement works on the River Stour at White Mill, Shapwick. The observations took place between 6th September and 10th September. The second phase of the enhancement includes the clearance of the southern leat and mill pond to the south of the mill building in order to allow water flow. The pond contains evidence for at least one earlier building or feature. The deep area or pit that maybe the remains of an earlier mill or associated building. The low level of water after the works suggests that the mill required a larger head of water than is currently available, provided by the old weir.
