SDO12362 - Archaeological Observations During the Construction of the A37 Road Improvements North of Evershot, Dorset

AC Archaeology carried out a programme of archaeological observations and recording during the course of engineering works associated with improvements to the A37 road. Four locations were monitored, representing areas identified as of archaeological potential by the Dorset County Archaeological Officer. Area A (Holywell Hill, ST59250489) was a new cutting west of the carriageway. A previous evaluation of this site had revealed pit containing probable Middle Bronze Age pottery. No additional features were present. Area B (NGR ST590056) comprised topsoil stripping across part of Bubb Down Plantation. The area was truncated by landscaping works for the existing A37 and no archaeological features were found. Area C (NGR ST 5901805306 comprised a 2m wide section excavated across a low earthen bank and ditch now forming a parish boundary. No clear dating evidence was recovered. Area D (ST59160570 and ST59100521 to ST59120560) was an engineer's tip and haul road east of Bubb Down Plantation. No archaeological remains were found.
