Abstract/Summary

Context One Archaeological Services carried out an archaeological watching brief during October 2010 at Park Lane, in relation to a new water supply main in Shaftesbury. This development comprised of the laying of 52m of new water main, using directional drilling from eight launch pits. In the north end of launch pit 2, a section of box drain was discovered, made from green sandstone. This was in the section of the pit, underneath man made layers including tarmac. In the south of launch pit 7, a length of 20th century brick built culvert, or soakaway was recorded. This measured 2.2m in diameter and 1.5m in depth. 9 sherds of pottery were recovered from launch pits 1 and 3. This was generally un-abraded and ranged from later medieval pots, to 19th century vessels. Considering where they were found, it is likely they were already previously disturbed by the installation of already existing services.
