Abstract/Summary

A documentary assessment followed by an archaeological evaluation were carried out as part of the planning process prior to the proposed development for residential dwellings on land adjacent to Forge Cottage, Dewlish, Dorset. The site is centred at NGR SY 7742 9820 and consists of a pasture field that slopes down from northwest to southeast between the heights of 89 and 95m OD. Three 14.00m by 1.70m trenches were excavated. Trench 1, by the Puddletown road, revealed on Mediaeval pit, an undated linear which may be part of the small enclosure shown on the 1845 map, and a thin layer associated with the demolition of dwellings fronting the road. Trench 2 revealed two Mediaeval and two undated stake holes. Trench 3 revealed only animal disturbance. The subsoil possibly has its origins in a Mediaeval ploughsoil. The evaluation took place on 2 and 3 June 1998.
