Abstract/Summary

Context One Archaeological Services Ltd (COAS) carried out an Archaeological Watching Brief at Warden Hill, Horchester, Dorset (centred on NGR ST 5954 0414) over 9 days between the 7th and the 28th of June 2009. The investigation was commissioned and funded by Wessex Water PLC.The Watching Brief was requested by the Local Planning Authority (Dorset County Council) on the advice of Mr Steve Wallis (Senior Archaeologist, Dorset County Council) following a consultation request by Ms Vicky Plumber (Environmental Scientist, Wessex Water plc). The archaeological work uncovered evidence for an undated possible road surface adjacent to the modern A37 road. Whist it is tempting to speculate that this might relate to the Roman road that is believed to follow the line of the present road, no dating evidence was recovered to confirm or refute this hypothesis. Extensive modern disturbance associated with recent road works and service trenches was also observed along much of the pipeline route.
