Abstract/Summary

Wessex Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation in connection with the first phase of a proposed housing development at Manor Farm, Maiden Newton, Dorset (SY 59709790). Within the overall development area two areas were targeted for evaluation. Three trial trenches were excavated by machine. No features or deposits of archaeological significance were revealed by the trenches. In the main area where ground levels are to be reduced within the devleopment proposals two trial trenches were excavated, representing 1.4% sample. This plogt of land is known to be the site of a former brick yard and appears to be of low archaeological potential based on the observations from the trial trenches. An undisturbed soil profile was found preserved below dumped material at the southern end of the site. Pottery dated to the eighteenth century or later was recovered from the buried soil horizon.
