Abstract/Summary

An archaeological evaluation was carried out on land immediately to the south of a Bronze Age barrow located on Trigon Hill situated some 3km to the north of Wareham, Dorset (SY8916 8968). The work was commissioned by ECC International following a request by the Mineral Planning Authority under paragraph 9 (10) of schedule 13 to the Environment Act 1995, and consultation with the Archaeology Service, Dorset County Council. A total of 4 machine excavated trenches, totalling 145.5m2 were positioned to the south of the barrow, which is a scheduled ancient monument (SAM no.: 29048). Trenching revealed a thin, humic soil covering a clayey sand natural. No pre-modern archaeological features or deposits were uncovered, suggesting that, like the majority of heathland barrows, the Trigon Hill monument exists in isolation with no associated archaeological features in close proximity.
