Abstract/Summary

Observations and recording carried out by Lilian Ladle during demolition and rebuilding of ten metres of wall on the east side of the rectory. The builder dug an exploratory trench mid-way along the 10m length, to help determine the nature of the wall's foundations and any other archaeological features. 'The wall itself was built of Purbeck stone rubble, which incorporated some architectural fragments. The wall was mortared on the two exterior surfaces but the rubble core was packed with earth. A number of pieces of stone had traces of diagonal tooling and there were some pieces of local red heathstone. The footings of the wall were very shallow. There were two stones which displayed architectural features and may have been parts of window openings. It is possible that these stones came from the demolished Norman castle or perhaps the earlier rectory which was destroyed by fire in 1762.'
