Abstract/Summary

Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Calcinotto and Associates Ltd on behalf of Maidwey Homes Ltd to undertake a preliminary archaeological appraisal of land at 51 Commercial Road, Weymouth. The summary conclusions given in the report were: 'Although there is little recorded archaeological evidence for this part of Weymouth, the location of the Site at the mouth of the harbour inlet and a comparison of the general topography of the area with other coastal sites in the region indicates some potential for prehistoric remains to survive within the site. There may be some potential for evidence relating to the probable Roman port and/or associated settlement, the location and extent of which are unknown. The location of the site within the developing medieval port/town of Melcombe Regis lends a strong potential for remains of activity from the 13th century these dates within the bounds of the Site [sic]. There would appear to have been a structure on the Site from at least the late 17th century and the potential for post-medieval remains is likely to be high.'
