Abstract/Summary

During June 1998 an archaeological field evaluation, by means of two machine-cut trenches, was carried out by AC archaeology on the site of a proposed residential development of land to the rear of 25/27 West Borough, off Redcotts Lane, Wimborne. The evaluation identified a deep, post-Medieval black soil overburden in both trenches varying in depth from 700mm in Trench 1 to 950mm in Trench 2 which sealed an alluvial sub-soil horizon, generally 400mm deep, of unknown date. This layer, which had been partly truncated in Trench 1 by 17th century and later features, overlay natural subsoil. No features were observed below this layer. With the exception of one fragment of Medieval roof tile, and three fragments of late Medieval (or early post-Medieval) pottery, no evidence for Medieval or earlier activity was present on the site.
