Abstract/Summary
AC Archaeology conducted an open area excavation of land between 28 and 30 Bell Street in adavance of construction of 28a Bell Street during 1999. This excavation followed on from an earlier desk based assessment and field evaluation of the site.
The excavations confirmed that a building was constructed on the site during the earlier part of the 17th century and was demolished during the early 19th century. A series of medieval rubbish pits pre-dated the construction of the building, although there were no associated medieval structures. The 17th century seems to have been of commercial rather than domestic use.
