Abstract/Summary
Wessex Archaeology conducted an archaeological evaluation on land to the rear of 4a West Street during 1998 in advance of the development of Old Garden Cottage, Luton Mews.
'Two 2m x 1m hand dug test pits were excavated within the footprint of the proposed building. Below the modern topsoil and a subsoil of recent date, probably of horticultural origin, was a deposit of silty clay, from which a small assemblage of worked flint, burnt flint and pottery, datable to the 18th century or later, was recovered. This directly overlay the natural alluvium and gravel substrata, which lay at between 126.60 and 126.30m OD. No archaeological features were found.'
