Abstract/Summary
Context One Archaeological Services (COAS) carried out an Archaeological Watching Brief on land between 199-201 High Street, Swanage (centred on NGR SZ 02528 78701), over four days between 19 February 2004 and 31 May 3005. The project was commissioned and funded by Mr and Mrs G Spickett.
Following demolition of the outbuilding, the deposit sequence consisted of a variety of modern layers overlying the natural clay, including concrete, garden soil, and limestone paving slabs overlying a modern brick drain lining. The site stratigraphy in the northern part of the development site consisted of a modern make-up layer covering natural clay. The rear (south) of the site was terraced prior to the construction of the original building. This activity may have removed any archaeology that might have been present, and may explain the lack of any definitively dated pre-post-medieval material.
