Abstract/Summary

In April 2002 Niall Oakey carried out an archaeological watching brief on groundworks associated with the construction of a house on land formerly occupied by The Old Forge, Mill Lane, Cerne Abbas, Dorset. No artefacts or features were observed that pre-dated the construction of the forge in the mid-nineteenth century. A ridge of Upper Greensand outcropped on the site and any traces of earlier activity are likely to have been destroyed by the construction of the forge and later modifications and additions to the structure. Archaeological evidence of activity during the lifetime of the forge was limited.
