SDO10640 - Castle Court, Osprey Quay, Portland, Dorset. Report on an Archaeological Site Investigation.

SLR Consulting was commissioned by Sutton Harbour Group to carry out an archaeological site investigation at Castle Court, Osprey Quay, Portland in connection with a proposed development in connection with the 2012 Olympics. Work took place in the week beginning 4 February 2008. Five test pits were dug, and revealed a degree of relatively modern disturbance. In places undisturbed clays identified as 'Head' deposits resulting from periglacial down-slope erosion were recorded. The author notes that deposits of this type on Portland are thought to have been stable from around the beginning of the Mesolithic; it is possible, therefore, that Palaeolithic land surfaces may survive beneath.
