Abstract/Summary

Terrain Archaeology undertook an archaeological desk-based assessment of South Western Scaffolding's premises in connection with a planning application for demolition of a temporary office and erection of a new office, workshop and store. The site lies within the scheduled area of Poundbury Camp (SM12501). The authors concluded that the site lies in an area of high archaeological potential, and that the proposed development, though small, had the potential to have an adverse effect on surviving archaeological remains. The proposed mitigation strategy was to undertake demolition and site clearance under archaeological supervision, and to strip and record the 'footprints' of the proposed new buildings and any other groundworks that might impinge upon the archaeology.
