Abstract/Summary

‘An evaluation by means of trench excavation on land at Newell House, Sherborne, was carried out by AC Archaeology during July 2003.’ An earlier desk top assessment had identified the possibility that the site lay within the putative early Christian enclosure of Lanprobus. The site is also bordered to the east by the medieval abbey’s mill stream. The trenches were located in areas likely to be effected by development. Medieval settlement remains comprising pits, post holes and linear features dating from the 10th-14th centuries were identified in the SW part of the site. These remains may represent a small settlement or farmstead, a possible precursor to a later farm complex associated with the 16th century barn next to Newell House. The northern part of the site was landscaped and infilled in the late 18th-early 19th centuries. The eastern part of the site was infilled in the 20th century.
