Abstract/Summary

An article concerning the initial analysis of pottery from Sherborne Castle. the pottery was visually subdivided into five groups A-E. These were then subjected to thin sectioning and compared with pottery from known sites in the region. The article concludes that pottery at Sherborne Castle has derived from as far a field as Bristol, Poole Harbour, South Wiltshire and Donyatt at different times between the 12th and 16th centuries. The basis of the study was a group of 12th-16th century sherds recovered during recent excavations (i.e. recent to 1979) at the Castle. These excavations were conducted by Peter White, Inspector of Ancient Monuments, for the Department of the Environment. No further information concerning these excavations is given here.
