SDO10309 - A discovery of 16th or 17th century pottery, Oborne Road, Sherborne. Proceedings of the Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society

C.E. Bean observed the cutting back of rock in the hillside behind and to the east of the Black Horse Hotel to form a new car park at ST 64441681 during 1952. Several small earlier quarry pits were revealed, containing green glazed pottery with curvilinear ornament and whitish slip and some with yellow-glaze, similar to that from the upper levels at Sherborne castle (16th-17th century). Clay pipes were recovered from the soil above the pits.
