Abstract/Summary

Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Wyevale Landscapes, acting on behalf of Christchurch Borough Council, to carry out an excavation in advance of the proposed restoration of the gardens of Highcliffe Castle. The excavation was undertaken to identify the layout and to test the level of survival of a 19th century parterre and formal garden feature. Most of the layout of the original parterre was found to survive, although the north-eastern portion had been destroyed.
