Abstract/Summary

Report on an archaeological watching brief conducted by ASI Heritage Consultants in September 2006 during the excavation of shallow groundworks occasioned by installation of an emergency power supply to St. Michaels loft at the east end of the Priory Church at Christchurch, Dorset. This revealed disturbed soil layers to a depth of c.350mm below the present ground level and a Purbeck stone pavement at a depth of c. 110mm at the base of the south transept. The latter had been disturbed and relaid in the recent past, but indicates the survival of earlier - possibly medieval - structures adjacent to the church building.
