Abstract/Summary
Brief catalogue of Roman inscriptions found in 1988. This includes the following entries for Dorchester (on page 355-6), reproduced here in full.
18. Dorchester (Durnovaria, SY 693906), Greyhound Yard. Wall sherd of a buff amphora found in 1984, inscribed vertically before firing, with a pen (producing a W-section line). The bold cursive letters read […]EOM[…].
19. Ibid. Conjoining sherds amounting to about half a Rhenish ware motto beaker 155 mm high, found in 1984, the motto painted with white slip in serifed capitals between two ands of rouletting and bands of piped decoration. It reads: V.[.].TIS, V[iva]tis, ‘Long life to you’.
20. Ibid. Base sherd of a black-burnished jar found in 1984. Scratched underneath after firing: A.
21. Ibid. Rim sherd of a black-burnished jar found in 1984. Scratched below the rim after firing ALBILA[…], Albil(l)a (?).
22. Ibid. Complete black-burnished flanged bowl found in 1984. Scratched inside on the base after firing are three lines, running from circumference to circumference, the first of the bent in the middle. The result, if it is epigraphic at all, and not just a mark of identification, could be read as III, CII, or LII.
23. Ibid. Rim sherd of a black-burnished jar found in 1984. Neatly scratched below ithe rim after firing: H.
24. Ibid. Rim sherd of a Black-burnished jar found in 1984. Scratched below the rim after firing: IVLA.
25. Buff flagon, complete but broken into many pieces, found in 1984. A graffito has been neatly incised on the shoulder between the two handles: NVTRICIS, ‘(Property) of Nutrix’.
26 Ibid. Two conjoining sherds preserving almost one-third of the neck of a large black-burnished jar, found in 1984. Inscribed on the shoulder before firing, in practiced capitals with serifs: [vacat?].[…]ACITVSPRIMVS, .[T]acitus Primus.
27 . Ibid. Rim sherd of a black-burnished pot found in 1984. Scratched below the rim after firing: […]TEOR.
