Abstract/Summary

An archaeological evaluation on the site of a proposed conversion of two existing farm buildings with an associated access track at New Barn Farm, Knowlton, near Wimborne, Dorset, was carried out by AC archaeology during January 2003 (sic). The area of the proposed development lies within 'Southern Henge', one of a group of three late Neolithic henge monuments known as the Knowlton Circles. The evaluation comprised the machine excavation of four trenches, each 3m in length and 1.5m wide, none of which revealed any evidence, in the form of features or finds, for pre-modern archaeological activity. Despite this, within a monument that is non-settlement in function, extensive evidence for features or finds might not be expected anyway. More localised deposits of perhaps high significance may be present within the vicinity, but could easily have been missed by the positioning of the evaluation trenches.
