Full Description
The Town Beam or King's Beam is situated outside the Custom House and bears a plaque describing its history. It is almost entirely modern, but is a replica of earlier town beams on this site. The Corporation records for 1579 describe the beam as being used for the weighing of merchandise of every stranger and foreigner for the purposes of levying duty. See ground photograph. <1>
Town Beam, Grade 2. Medieval town beam, repaired and restored in 1947. RCHM <2> describe it as a wool scales and state that some original iron fittings remain, although the woodwork has been renewed. <2-3>
