Full Description
The Elizabethan Guildhall, built in 1572, stood in the centre of Castle Street where it widens near Messrs. H. Harmans store. The Guildhall occupied the first floor while the prison was below. The building was demolished in the early 19th century. <1>
A wall plaque on Messrs. H. Harmans stores records the site of the Guildhall nearby and the fact that Rev. John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, was imprisoned there for six months in the reign of Charles II. The site of the Guildhall at SZ 01069039 is now covered by a modern road. <2>
