Full Description

The almshouses of St George still stand in Church Street. The original building was erected about 1400 but it is now very much over-restored and altered. In ancient times a small guild chapel adjoined the almshouses, but there is now no trace of this. <2>

A wall plaque records the history of the building. The whole of the original building appears to have been refaced during modern times, although some of the lower walling may be original. It was not possible to view the interior of the building; no exterior woodwork was visible. Still in use as almshouses. See ground photograph. <3>

Almshouses, Grade 2. St George's Almshouses are of one storey, built of coursed rubble with a tiled roof. The almshouses are a Medieval foundation, referred to in 1429, but much altered. The building was drastically restored in 1904. <4>
