Medieval saltworks at Studland. Supported by the place name Salterne (which indicates a building or place where salt was made or sold). The Domesday Book records the presence of saltpans on Studland.

SZ 029836. The place name 'Salterne' derives from 'building(s) where salt was made or sold'; there were 32 saltpans (saline) at Studland in 1086 Domesday. <1-2>

This area is still marked as a salterne on the first edition OS map.
