Full Description

A large Palaeolithic stone axe, 10ins long by nearby 3 1/2ins wide, was picked up on Ballard Down, Swanage, in April 1979. It was found 200 yds east north east of the triangulation station on top of the Down (SZ 02748125), on the surface of a ploughed field among fragments of chalk and flint. The axe, which was authenticated by Dorchester County Museum, was retained by the finder, Mr John Batey of Liskeard School, Cornwall. <1>
