Full Description

"There remains at Higher Ham (Hamworthy) a large ancient house", the seat of the Carys or Carew family, now turned into a farmhouse. <1>

The former manor house at Hamworthy which until recently was in use as the rectory, must have been built by the Carew family shortly after 1600. The building is now incorporated in a secondary school. <3>

The former rectory and manor house appears to be in its original condition and now presents a rather dilapidated appearance. It forms a portion of the Herbert Carter School and is the residence of the caretaker. <4>

SY 998905. The Old Rectory, Hamworthy formerly the Manor House, of two storeys and attics with brick walls and tiled roof was built in the mid 17th century as the seat of the Carew family. It is notable for use of carved brickwork for the Classical order and mouldings of the south east front. The house was extensively altered internally in the 19th century. <5>

SY 99839058. The Old Rectory (name confirmed) is at present being renovated for future occupation. It remains as described above in good condition. <7>

Manor house, later rectory, built circa 1650 for the Carew family. The interior was altered in the mid 19th century and the house was restored in the 20th century. It is constructed from red brick in English bond on a coursed squared limestone plinth with plain tile roofs and brick end stacks. The two-storied house with attic is of a compact plan with a central cross hall, staircase to the rear of the hall, a major room either side and lesser rooms to the rear. The main front faces east and is articulated by an order of giant Ionic pilasters defining bays, with pedestals and full entablature. It is a gentry house of national importance in the artisan mannerist style, very little altered externally. <9>
