Full Description

Romano-British pottery lamp with stamped rosettes found in Lake Clay pits, probably before 1900. In Bournemouth Natural Science Society Museum.<1>

Ancient clay workings at Doultons Clay Works, Lake Shore, Hamworthy. Mr. S.H. Willetts the Manager of the works has noticed as many as one hundred. One is templed to attribute so thorough an undertaking to Romano-British days. Several sherds of Romano-British pottery were discovered in one of the old workings in 1910. <2>

The Roman lamp from this area is still to be seen in the Bournemouth Natural Science Museum. The site of the clay workings is now taken over by the Admiralty as a Patrol point. No historical information was encountered rendering an accurate siting for the lamp and sherds possible. <3>
