Full Description

Since the middle of the C19th, Roman finds, especially pottery and coins have been found throughout Wareham in the area bounded by the Saxon town walls. No structures have been identified so far although possible building stone has been found at the old cemetery (SY 98 N 69), and in this area, the density of pottery discovered does suggest a settlement focus. Pottery and coins are also well represented in the North West quadrant, particularly along Mill Lane. The finds span the entire Roman period, but do not at present justify according Roman Wareham the status of a small town. (1-4)
