Medieval saltworking sites at Ower, Wytch and Fitzworth, recorded on Wytch Moor during trial trenching in 1988.

Milton Abbey had thirteen salt-makers rendering 20 shillings at Ower in Purbeck (Ower Farm at SY 998855) according to Domesday 1086 (1) Several salterns are also mentioned in 1545 in connection with Wytch (Wytch Farm - SY 978855) and Fitzworth (Fitzworth Farm - SY 990867) according to Hutchins (2). Saltings, as shown on OS 6 1925, abound on the shores of Poole Harbour including at or near the places described above. (1-3)
