Summary

18th century landscape park at Encombe House. The park contains lakes, woodland and gardens located around the house. Also present is a possible 18th century walled kitchen garden, and a late 18th/early 19th garden temple. Landscaping and extensive planting was undertaken during the mid 1750s

Full Description

C18 landscape park, with lakes, woodland and agricultural land, c.100ha, with central area of garden round house of c.8ha. Walled kitchen garden probably C18 to rear, and west of stables. Temple, late C18/early C19 60m to south west of house. Landscaping and extensive planting, undertaken mid 1970s for John Pitt. <6>

The park and pleasure grounds had been laid out by 1774 by John Pitt with advice from William Pitt. The park was extended by William Morton Pitt in 1794 with further improvements made by George Repton after 1806. Further alterations to the park were made by Anthony Salvin circa 1870. <7>
