Summary

Situated amongst the remains of a multi-period industrial landscape at Kimmeridge Bay are the excavated remains of a glass works, partially overlying the site of an alum works. Partial excavations in 1980-1 identified two furnaces dating from 1616-18 and 1618-23. Both structures remain preserved in situ along with associated deposits.

Full Description

Sir William Clavell operated a glass furnace, overlooking Kimmeridge Bay, from 1615-1623. Excavations revealed a furnace in the shape of butterfly wings with a central flue, within a rectangular building. Large quantities of glass slag and crucible fragments were present. (1,2) WATER)
