Full Description

An oval area, traversed by a possible lynchet, lying some 300 yards west of Encombe Gwyle and 100 yards from the cliff edge, SY 94097748, was investigated by W. Frend circa 1936. The area was much disturbed by rabbits but traces of possible hut floors were discovered together with pottery and other objects ranging from the early Iron Age A to early Roman period. (Now in Dorset County Museum). Evidence of an Early Iron Age industry of hand-cut shale armlets also appeared. Finds of the same period were also revealed in the recently cultivated area further west at SY 939776 (see below). <1-2>

The excavations of circa 1936 are probably wrongly recorded at SY 94097748, and the Commission appear to suggest that they belong further west on the settlement site at SY 939776 (See SY 97 NW 14). <3>

There are no earthwork remains to indicate the site of this settlement, situated at the SE end of a spur which is regularly cultivated. <4>
