Find Spot record MWX634 - Iron Age/Romano-British shale cores, Clavells Hard, Kimmeridge

Kimmeridge `coal money has been recorded from Clavells Hard (centred SY 92057775). The Kimmeridge coal, dipping to the east, passes into the sea about 200 yards east of the headland at Clavells Hard. <1>

No information regarding the site of these finds was obtained during field investigation. There were no surface finds in the area. <2>

An abundance of Iron Age/Romano-British shale cores found at Kimmeridge, Smedmore in approximately 1768. (Sited from Fig.9. p.68). <3>

'SMEDMORE AREA: Waste from a shale armlet industry noted by Hutchins in 1768. Calkin considers that the site may be near Clavell's Head, Kimmeridge, near the shore. Calkin class C cores abundant. The fields in the area are regularly ploughed. 7/7/D.'
