Summary

Charmouth is recorded as a village called 'Cernemude' in the Domesday Book. It has been suggested as a possible site for the Battle of Carrum in AD833 when King Egbert fought invading Danes.

'AD 833. This year King Egbert fought against the men of thirty-five ships at Charmouth, and there was a great slaughter made and the Danish men maintained possession of the field.'
