Full Description

The Southampton and Dorchester Railway, also known as the Castlemans Corkscrew or the Water Snake, covered a distance of 60.5 miles and operated between Southampton and Dorchester via Ringwood, Wimborne, Hamworthy and Wareham. It was promoted by A.L Castleman to be a link in a trunk route to the West country, originally intended to be operated by Great Western Railway. Construction started in 1845 and to save construction costs a single track was laid around hills and heads of estuaries. It opened in 1847 and was operated and later absorbed by London and South Western Railway. The track was doubled between 1857 and 1863. The section between Lymington Junction (SU 293005) and Hamworthy Junction (SY 988918) was closed to passengers in 1964 and now has been dismantled. (2-3)
