Maritime record MWX5084 - Iona

Small British sailing yacht which foundered in 1985 between No 8 and No 10 buoys on the landward side of the Swash Channel training bank. The reason why she foundered is not known. Found by a sonar survey

The building date for this vessel is an estimate based on an average age at wrecking of twenty years. This average is derived from those vessels wrecked on the Dorset coast whose age at wrecking is known.

Horizontal datum: WGS 84
Quality of fix: For filing only but vessel was seen sinking and her masts were visible for some time.
Charted as IONA 'entire wreck' in the Marine zone.

Vessel structure / Archaeological remains:

Lies in position 50°40.10N, 001°56.18W, in a general depth 1m. (3)

Her mast was reported to be visible some 10 days after she foundered but her present condition is not known. (3)

Documentary evidence for the vessel:

'Sank midway between Nos 8 & 10 buoys on the landward side of the bank.' (2)

No further information about the vessel has been found.
