Full Description

The Steamship Dinnington struck the breakwater whilst entering Portland harbour in a gale in 1901. (1)

On the 21st March 1901 the Dinnington was trying to enter Portland harbour in a gale. The crew failed to see the warning light and she ran straight onto the Northern Breakwater, then under construction. The crew were all rescued and, surprisingly enough, so was the Dinnington. She was re-floated several weeks later with remarkably little damage.(2)

The building date for this vessel is an estimate based on an average age at wrecking of twenty years. This average is derived from those vessels wrecked on the Dorset coast whose age at wrecking is known.
