Full Description
Poole & Ower Passage Boat, stranded on the 9th March 1759 near Furzey Island. The vessel is also known as the Wych Market Boat. (1)
In this storm 19 persons in a passage-boat from Poole to Wareham, were forced upon the beach, 13 of whom perished in endeavouring to reach the shore. Nothing could be more dismal than to see the poor souls half-buried in the mud, with the sea beating over them, without being able to afford them any relief, and their piercing cries were terrible.(2)
The building date for this vessel is an estimate based on an average age at wrecking of twenty years. This average is derived from those vessels wrecked on the Dorset coast whose age at wrecking is known.
