Full Description
Poole Museum discovered traces of a large sand pit or pits during an evaluation of the former Seldown School playing fields (now the Holiday Inn) in 1991. The full extent of the sand pit(s) is not known. It was backfilled with dark soils in the 19th century. (1) (2)
The 1751 map of Poole annotates the area of the site as "the Sand Pitts" on "the Common of Cell Down". (3)
