Monument record MWX4862 - Sand pit, Seldown School Playing Fields, Poole

The remains of a large sand pit or pits was partially uncovered during an evaluation excavation by Poole Museums Service of the former playing fields of Seldown School in 1991. Historic map evidence indicates there were sand pits in this area in 1751. The pit had been backfilled in the 19th century.

Poole Museum discovered traces of a large sand pit or pits during an evaluation of the former Seldown School playing fields (now the Holiday Inn) in 1991. The full extent of the sand pit(s) is not known. It was backfilled with dark soils in the 19th century. (1) (2)

The 1751 map of Poole annotates the area of the site as "the Sand Pitts" on "the Common of Cell Down". (3)
